Wedding Drinks - Don't be afraid to be unique

If you’re just thinking about writing your wedding list, I bet at the back of your mind you’re questioning yourself on why you really need another set of pots and pans with the matching ladle? And if you have just received a wedding list, I bet your wracking your mind on which gift is the most meaningful to give to a couple who you care for deeply. After all you must be spoilt for choice, with so many sentimental items to choose from...carving knives, irons, a kettle, and many more. If you think you’d like to try something a bit more out the ordinary and maybe a tad more useful, then maybe its time to start thinking a little deeper, or more conveniently reading on…

For the wedding reception alone an average couple look to keep to a budget of about £1000 to keep guests largered up and happy at their expense. Yet this task proves challenging, as it's not as simple as bunging a bottle of wine on each table, as the sweet toothed grannies, wine snobs, his mates, her Cosmo girls, and all the other peculiar ones have to be catered for. And you guessed it, not everyone is going to like the same things, somehow I don’t see a wine critique sipping on a glass of shandy. The thought of it is probably leaving you teary eyed and ready to hit the bottle yourself, if you didn’t have enough to handle with the ceremony, now the wedding drinks are causing a hassle.

So we have two dilemmas, you want to say goodbye to both the naff wedding list and the booze bothers. Why not kill two birds with one stone? How? I hear you cry. Well, why not make an original wedding list, asking for a selection of wedding drinks, thus setting up an interesting liquid list.

The Dos and Don'ts of Drinks for Wedding

THE DOs...

  • Do buy your wedding drinks as early as possible; you never know you could bag yourself a bargain.
  • Think before you buy, you may think ‘oh look this is a cheap champagne…it’ll do, and save me a penny or two’, whilst turning your nose up to a premium sparkling wine. Well don’t as most pernium sparkling wines taste much better than a cheap champagne, and my guess is, your guests will appreciate it more.
  • Serve a wine that's a little out of the ordinary. Not only will this show you know a whole range of wines, but also this way it's likely your guests won’t have heard of it, and won't be able to guess the price.

... and THE DON'Ts

  • Favouritism will not go down well. Don’t serve better wedding Drinks at the top table; it will only annoy the relatives who didn’t make the cut to be on top table.
  • Don’t take any of your guests for grantage, with a wedding drink or two inside them, they’ll be on a hunt for your private wedding drink stash. So remember to lock the cellar door!
